Under the Vault of Heaven
A queer, genderbent retelling of the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West.
Demi-god and incorrigible troublemaker Sun Zeha is four years into a lifetime sentence of being crushed under a mountain when Sana stumbles into her prison cave. The unfortunate nun is on a heaven-sent mission to fetch sacred texts. Believing Zeha a demon in need of reform, Sana offers to release her in exchange for protection as she lost her bodyguards to a hungry tiger. Zeha agrees with the intention of walking away. Freeing Zeha gives Sana control of a shock collar that binds their lives together. Despite this rather unhappy start to their relationship and Sana’s incessant moralizing, the journey isn’t all unpleasant. For one thing, they pick up some fun travel buddies: Paoma, a young dragon who needs to prove his worth, Ping, a consistently drunk godling who wants to reunite with her divine family in the heavens, and Jin, a reformed pirate. Still, Zeha’s frustration with Sana builds until she simply wants to finish the quest so they can go their separate ways. But even that might require Zeha to confront her past, her identity, and the reason she ended up under the mountain. |
