1. The Island of Souls
Zoe Shin spends her nights driving wealthy, drunk professionals as well as their cars through the winding streets of Hong Kong Island back to their expensive apartments. She spends at least some of her days conducting investigations for the Department of Order in the spirit world version of Hong Kong. The spirit world exists in parallel to the mortal one and in years past, the borders were porous enough that many of humankind’s great myths and folktales have an element of truth to them. With the advent of modern technology, spirits retreated from the mortal world and Zoe’s basic job description is to help keep the existence of spirits a secret from humankind. Her spirit ancestry and her ability to pass between the worlds without resorting to the heavily regulated portals aids her with both of her jobs. Her supervisor asks Zoe to look into a new drug called CLR, which seems to allow humans to see past the illusions spirits adopt when they venture into the human world. Zoe’s investigations bring her into conflict with a college student named Rita who knows more about the spirit world than she should and draw her into a web of politics and deception that goes to the heart of what passes for government in the spirit world. |
