1. A Rising Storm
Half a century ago, the powerful Rozin Empire imploded in a violent conflagration that left a long ribbon of ruined land running through what was once its center. In the time since, many scattered and lesser powers have risen and fell so that the area remains in a state of chaotic disorder with only a few small pockets of stability. One way or another, a turning point is coming, triggered in part by seven people who possess powers they cannot explain. Fate, or perhaps the machinations of a group of beings connected to the demise of the old empire, conspire to bring them together. Against her good sense, Saier allows herself to be dragged directly into a power struggle which ends predictably poorly for her. In the process, she encounters Melanie, the only other person she’s ever met with abilities as inexplicable as hers. In Calavant, Amara is nearing completion of the first stage of her plan to bring lasting peace to the dominion of the fallen empire. Peace though, will first require war. After fleeing into the wastelands, Zenyi runs into Kalim and Ollin, two young men she has never met but feels an unaccountable connection with.
2. A Gathering Force
Having conquered and subdued Calavant, Amara sets her sights on Rhein, the country to its west. Armed with the power to control lightning and backed by a loyal army, her invasion proceeds apace. At least until resistance fighters rise up, inspired by the example of three people who also wield inexplicable magic. Zenyi, Kalim, and Ollin soon find themselves further and further enmeshed into the resistance effort even though they only stumbled into this conflict while trying to escape the murderous attentions of a group of beings who might be connected with the fall of the empire Amara is trying to resurrect. Elsewhere in the country, Melanie and Saier run from demons of their own. The war swirls around them as well, churning up ghosts from Saier’s past and forcing her to confront it. None of them understands the magic they wield, even as it takes new forms and gives them power to shape the world. But they will need to if they are to make sure the power that connects them does not take control.
